“1942 A Love Story” depicts a delightful romantic tale with the background of the Indian battle for freedom. Though the plot revolves round the love story, it’s treatment is unlike other Bollywood films, for the political turmoil of 1942 plays villainy in this case. “1942 A Love Story” is an epic that celebrates the people of India and their struggle to free their motherland from the imperialist Britain.

The film is undoubtedly a masterpiece; however there are a few reasons that clearly pinpoint at the success. This was Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s third film and he strikes a difference in this film by collaborating with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The award winning music was composed by the music maestro RD Burman, though this was his last creation. The Lyrics of the songs, which again bagged awards, were by Javed Akhtar. The film also brought in Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Anupam Kher, Danny Denzongpa and Prem together with the debutant Manisha Koirala who fit in splendidly into the innocent role of Rajjo. From story to cinematography, from music to star casts, ‘1942 A Love Story’ brought in some of the best in the industry.

The story opens in a beautiful hill town with its picturesque landscape and an innocent beauty in Rajjo and the flowering love of Narendra. However, very soon the viewers sense the tension and the turmoil brewing deep in the then British ruled India and wait in apprehension for the worst to hit. The two stories run parallel and then get intertwined driving it to the climax with the hanging of General Douglas

Among all other key features for the success of the film was the stunning music by R.D.Burman who creates yet another magnum opus. “Ek Ladki Ko Dekha” and “Pyaar Hua Chupke Se” won the best Play Back Singer in both the male and female category in the Filmfare Awards. The film also bagged many more awards including the Best Music Director, Best Lyricist, Best Sound Design, Best Editing, Best Cinematographer, Best Art Direction, Best Supporting Actor for Jackie Shroff in the Filmfare Awards and Best Supporting Actor for Anupam Kher and again Best Music Director for R D Burman in the Star Screen Awards. At 7.3 on IMDb scale, this movie is definitely a multiple watch and a relish for many years to come.
